Pikedaw Calamine Caverns (Day After AGM)

Dear, dear, me. Not a very good turnout considering all the talk that went on the previous day. One member turned up and two nearly did. Fortunately Patrick Warren arrived looking for mischief and equipped with a rope to carry out same. Consequently one President and one non-member (fully equipped with BCA Insurance Card) descended and spent a couple of hours exploring various parts and noting the strong draught at the end of 84 Cavern, in close proximity to the Craven Fault, which cuts right through this area. The fun started on the exit when the senior member asked for a better rig to get of the manhole at the top, the rope being barely adequate in length. Patrick disappeared upwards and after a few minutes shouted down "Rope free!"

Looking up the senior member found the end of the rope a good two metres above floor level. "Hmm. Must have shrunk due to drips down the shaft whilst we were away exploring". "Never mind, Patrick managed it OK". "Let's have a go" Now I discovered a possible reason for a two metre length of tubular steel ladder resting against the wall. Climbing up the top rung and perching perilously there whilst maintaining balance with the left hand, on a pretty featureless wall, I could just get hold of the rope end with fingertips of my right hand and pull it down a little. "Hmm. How do I get a jammer on to it? "I know: hold the very tip of the rope in my teeth, still perched in the air, I could just, and only just, get a hand jammer on sufficiently to launch myself into mid air. With a bit more bouncing about I soon managed to get the chest jammer on and arrived at the top to find Patrick had re-rigged the rope to ease the passage out. “Hmm”. He said. “These knots do take up a lot of rope, don’t they Dad”.

As for the two that nearly did turn up but not quite: they spent the day, I am reliably informed, engaged in other activities. They made up lost time by going down Pikedaw on a later date.
