Swinsto Hole, 27/01/07

Ian Cummins, Simon Beck.

The club Rowten Cave trip renewed my interest in Kingsdale and I got in touch with Simon, initially to enquire about Dowbergill, but wet weather during the week meant I was not displeased with the alternative of Swinsto. I'd been in Rowten Pot years ago and I hadn’t been in the Master Cave. We went in here first to rig a ladder for the exit, although some ropes were in-situ. A quick walk up the hill and we found the stream sink. My regular Lakes climbing mate had made his one and only cave trip here, with a team of Lakes climbing all-stars and declared the crawl to be horrendous and vowed never to cave again. In fact we could crouch for a lot of it and the streambed was smooth enough to slide along, with the water carrying the tackle bag along nicely. A few short pitches led to the big one, with a ledge at half height. We took a bit of a pummelling here and I was reminded of the wisdom of Simon rigging the ropes caver-style, rather than how your average climber would when pulling the ropes, to allow ascent of the rope in an emergency. A couple more pitches and a bit of free climbing and we were in the rubble of the Great Aven inlet, scene of much rock fall. A bit of muddy crawling brought us out into the Master cave and a view of the deep water up to the Rowten sumps. I was reminded of my student club mates who dived these sumps with a local during a summer visit and declared the experience to be much harder than Swildon’s sumps 2 and 3, which we regularly used to do. We went back down to the ladder along that superb high stream way. The climb out didn’t look too bad for a free climb, but we used the ladder and were soon on the surface. Definitely a top trip, thanks Simon. I’ll do this one again for sure.
